What the Strikes Actually Achieved

Operation Epic Fury, the US-Israel joint military campaign, ran from February 28 to May 5, 2026. Protests had spread to 28 of Iran's 31 provinces by early 2026. The strikes redirected domestic anger outward, unified hardliners and moderates around survival, and gave the new leadership a nationalist mandate that domestic opposition had been eroding for months.

Iran's missile launcher capacity will not recover quickly. Launchers require industrial production capacity, technical crews, and time. The 70% reduction in operational launchers is a durable degradation that shapes Iran's military options for years, not months.

The nuclear program's status is genuinely unclear. One of the war's stated aims was terminating Iran's nuclear capabilities. Iran has said its ballistic missile program is not subject to negotiation under any MOU framework. Whether the strikes set back enrichment infrastructure significantly, or whether survivable facilities and dispersed knowledge mean the program reconstitutes, is a question the public record does not yet answer definitively.

The succession question may be the most consequential long-term variable. Analysts identify the scenario under Mojtaba Khamenei as potentially producing a leader more reckless, more aggressively anti-Western, and more committed to acquiring nuclear weapons than his father. The war targeted the more calculating of the two. Whether the replacement proves more or less manageable over the next decade is the variable that will determine whether Operation Epic Fury ultimately served US strategic interests.
