NASA continues to make steady progress on its Artemis program following the successful Artemis II mission in April, with the agency now naming the crew and refining plans for Artemis III, the next major step in its effort to return humans to the Moon.

On June 9, 2026, NASA announced the four astronauts selected for Artemis III: Mission Specialist Andre Douglas, who will make his first spaceflight; Mission Specialist Frank Rubio, who previously spent a record 371 consecutive days in space; Pilot Luca Parmitano, an astronaut from the European Space Agency (ESA); and Commander Randy Bresnik, who will embark on his third space mission. Bob Hines has been named as the backup crew member.

The announcement came alongside a significant change in Artemis III's objectives. Instead of landing on the Moon as originally planned, the mission will now remain in Earth orbit to test docking operations between the Orion spacecraft and commercial lunar landers being developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin. NASA says the revised mission profile is designed to reduce risk and validate critical technologies before astronauts attempt a lunar landing on a future mission.

NASA officials have described Artemis III as one of the most complex missions ever undertaken by the agency. It will mark the first time NASA coordinates a launch campaign involving multiple spacecraft while integrating several new operational capabilities into the Artemis program.

The mission follows the success of Artemis II, which launched on April 1, 2026. The crewed mission carried astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen on a 10-day journey around the Moon before safely splashing down off the California coast on April 10. The flight provided valuable data on the Orion spacecraft, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and associated ground systems.

Preparations for Artemis III are already underway at Kennedy Space Center. The mission's core stage was moved into the Vehicle Assembly Building in April, while teams began stacking operations for the next flight. NASA also announced that Artemis III will not use the agency's remaining Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS). Instead, the hardware will be preserved for Artemis IV, and Artemis III will fly with a non-propulsive spacer component currently under development.

The revised mission plan has implications for NASA's exploration timeline. Artemis III is currently targeted for launch in late 2027. NASA continues to aim for the first crewed Artemis lunar landing in early 2028, which is now expected to occur on a subsequent mission. The eventual landing is planned near the Moon's south pole, a region believed to contain significant deposits of water ice that could support a long-term human presence on the lunar surface.

The Artemis III crew selection has also sparked public discussion because no women are included on the mission roster. NASA leadership has stated that the selected astronauts were chosen based on mission requirements and crew availability while acknowledging the broader conversation about representation within the astronaut corps.

Beyond crew and hardware milestones, NASA is continuing work on mission communications, science objectives, CubeSat deployment opportunities, and astronaut training. Additional mission details are expected to be finalized as Artemis III moves closer to launch.
