President Donald Trump publicly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in unusually direct terms during a New York Times interview.

"He's a very difficult guy. To be honest with you, he should be very thankful to us for doing this. Because if Iran had a nuclear weapon, Israel wouldn't be around for two hours," Trump said.

The comments followed a tense week in which the United States and Israel appeared closer to a public disagreement than at any point in recent years. The immediate cause was an Israeli airstrike in Beirut that Trump believed threatened the US-Iran agreement his administration was negotiating.

Netanyahu later defended his position, saying his responsibility was to protect Israel's future and ensure the country's security was never compromised.

The Beirut Strike That Put the Deal at Risk

As the United States and Iran were finalizing a 14-point memorandum of understanding to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Israel launched an airstrike on Beirut's Dahieh district targeting what it described as a Hezbollah command center.

Trump reacted publicly, saying the strike should not have happened while both sides were so close to reaching a peace agreement.

According to reports, Trump personally called Netanyahu and urged him not to authorize additional strikes. Iranian officials also warned that continued attacks could jeopardize negotiations with Washington.

The agreement ultimately survived. Israel reportedly canceled additional planned strikes, and on June 18 the United States and Iran signed the memorandum.

Israel's Main Concern

The dispute extended beyond the Beirut strike.

Israeli officials were reportedly frustrated that they had not been fully involved in negotiations over an agreement that directly affected Israel's national security.

The memorandum included a ceasefire involving Hezbollah in Lebanon, but Israeli leaders stated they would not consider themselves bound by those provisions. Defense officials insisted Israel would continue taking military action whenever necessary to defend the country.

For Washington, excluding Israel from direct negotiations helped make an agreement with Tehran possible. For Jerusalem, the arrangement raised concerns that decisions affecting Israel's security were being made without Israeli participation.

A Pattern of Disagreement

Although Trump and Netanyahu have often presented themselves as close allies, their relationship has experienced moments of tension.

Trump has previously criticized Netanyahu over security decisions and questioned his judgment on several occasions.

The events of June 2026 brought those disagreements into the public spotlight. Instead of expressing frustration privately, Trump openly criticized Netanyahu while promoting what he viewed as a major diplomatic success.

The disagreement reflected two different priorities. Trump focused on preserving a historic diplomatic agreement, while Netanyahu emphasized Israel's freedom to respond militarily to security threats.

What Happens Next

The memorandum opens a 60-day negotiating period during which both sides are expected to finalize a comprehensive agreement.

Several major questions remain unresolved:

Whether Israel will support or oppose the final agreement.
How the ceasefire in Lebanon will be enforced.
Whether Iran will continue participating if fighting resumes.
How restrictions on Iran's nuclear program will be verified.
What role sanctions relief and economic assistance will play in the final agreement.

The outcome of these negotiations will largely determine whether the memorandum becomes a lasting peace agreement or another temporary diplomatic breakthrough.

Conclusion

Trump's criticism of Netanyahu reflected more than a personal disagreement. It exposed a deeper divide over how to manage Iran's nuclear program and regional security.

Trump viewed diplomacy as the best path toward preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Netanyahu continued to argue that Israel must retain complete freedom to act against any threat, regardless of diplomatic negotiations.

Whether those competing approaches can be reconciled during the 60-day negotiation period will determine the future of the agreement and the stability of the region.
