U.S. President Donald Trump held separate telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, America's Independence Day, reaffirming Washington's commitment to finding a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine ahead of a pivotal NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. The calls came as Russian forces stepped up efforts to seize more of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, a key Kremlin objective, while Ukraine continued to target Russian energy infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.

Trump spoke with Putin by telephone for nearly 90 minutes, with Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov stating that the U.S. president offered to help find a solution to the Ukraine war. Ushakov described the conversation as "businesslike and quite constructive," noting that Russia sought "a political-diplomatic resolution of the conflict, with due account of Russia's fundamental approach." Putin congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence during the call, with Ushakov confirming that Trump "reaffirmed his readiness to facilitate a swift end to hostilities and the search for solutions to overcome the crisis." It was the fourth such conversation between the two leaders this year, according to Russian officials.

Ukrainian President Zelensky, who also spoke with Trump on Saturday, said the two discussed the war's 1,200-kilometer front line. "There is a real prospect to end this war and American resolve will have a crucial meaning," Zelensky wrote on Telegram, adding that both leaders agreed to continue talks at the NATO summit next week. Zelensky described the call as "very good" and noted that Trump had "reaffirmed his readiness to facilitate the earliest possible cessation of hostilities and the search for peaceful solutions." The Ukrainian president said both leaders agreed to continue their discussions during the NATO summit in Ankara, scheduled for July 7 and 8.

According to Kremlin aide Ushakov, Trump indicated that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would continue their efforts at brokering a settlement and were prepared to make another visit to Moscow if further negotiations required direct engagement. However, the diplomatic track remains difficult. Russia has said any solution must include Moscow assuming full control over Ukraine's Donbas region, a demand Ukraine firmly rejects. Zelensky urged Putin last month to hold a one-on-one meeting, but the Kremlin refused. U.S. diplomatic efforts have also virtually stalled in recent weeks, as Washington's attention has shifted toward the conflict with Iran.

On the battlefield, the Kremlin claimed this weekend that Russian forces had captured Kostiantynivka, a strategically important city in the Donetsk region, calling it an "important milestone." Ukraine's military and Zelensky flatly denied the claim, stating that Kyiv's forces retained control of the city. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington-based think tank, "Putin's and the Russian military command's exaggerated claims about Russian battlefield performance are part of a narrative that seeks to portray a Russian victory in Ukraine as inevitable and Ukrainian frontlines as collapsing." On the same day as the calls, Ukrainian drones struck an oil terminal in St. Petersburg that Zelensky said "generates revenue for Russia's war," with more than eight Russian oil refineries attacked over the past month and over 60 storage tanks destroyed or critically damaged.

The NATO summit in Ankara, set to begin July 7, will be attended by heads of state and delegations from 32 countries, with the Ukraine conflict expected to dominate the agenda. Germany's Foreign Ministry confirmed that continued support for Ukraine's defense would be a central focus of the gathering, particularly after Russia carried out one of its most intense airstrikes of the year against Kyiv on Thursday, killing 30 people in the Ukrainian capital and striking multiple other regions including Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia. The summit comes as NATO allies grapple with questions over burden-sharing, after the U.S. announced it would "rightsize" its contributions to the NATO force model, citing the need for European allies to carry greater responsibility for collective defense.

The Independence Day diplomacy underscores the unresolved tension at the heart of the Ukraine conflict: Washington's desire to end the war is clear, but the wide gap between Moscow's maximalist territorial demands and Kyiv's refusal to cede sovereign land leaves little room for a near-term breakthrough. With envoys Witkoff and Kushner still in play and a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Zelensky expected in Ankara, the coming days will test whether the renewed American diplomatic push can move beyond carefully worded phone calls and into substantive progress at the negotiating table.
